We had Jamie Vollmer come in to speak to us about "the good old days of education." I love his term to describe this myth..."nostegia" which is a combination of nostalgia and amnesia!!!

Thanks Chris. Love the quote and the call to arms. Let's focus on what unites us rather than what divides us.

We have enough challenges in education without having to deal with either mistruths or myths. One of the myths that progressive and forward thinking educators often hear is about how good it was in the good old days of education. My retort is "The past most often remembers better than it lived!" I'm beginning to believe that one of the critical roles in school improvement is to be simple mythbusters! Let's move education forward based on data and research not myths and half truths!

Tom,
As always you make me think deeply abou the things that truly matter when it comes to teaching and learing. I've always believed we are in charge of our own professional development. We can't wait for it to come to us we have to go and find it. That is exactly what I've done over the past 25 years. I must say, I've learned a great deal and I don;t regret one minute. Tom I need to ask a favor and hope you can email me. I am trying to locate an article you shared with me a few years ago. Hope to hear from you. Linda

Tom,
This is an inspiring story. Thank you for sharing your incredible work! My daughter (Maya) is learning about Canada right now in her 6th grade social studies class in Georgia. We were just talking about Nunavut last night as she was studying for a test today. The stories make it so much more real and meaningful!

Be well,
Nicole

Thanks Brian. I think you are right in the notion that sharing/telling your story does promote healing and works to eliminate any feelings of isolation. I feel fortunate to have had the conversations I had during my visit. Keep in touch.

Hi Tom,
Great post. Thanks for sharing your story with us. It surely is great when people, who share a similar experience, can tell their story to you after you have shared with them. The ability to share must, indeed, play a major part in the healing process.
